More Groups, Organizations, and Resources for Women Vets

Women veterans face special issues in their return to civilian life. Beyond the usual resources of the Veterans Affairs office, there are many advocacy groups that are working to improve the assistance and resources available to our servicewomen. Here are some that may be of interest:

  • National Association of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies: This organization strives to make child care available and affordable for all families around the nation. The program has special services for military families that may help ease the transition for military moms returning to civilian life.
  • VFW Unmet Needs Programs: The Veterans of Foreign Wars provides grants for military families experiencing unforeseen financial difficulties. The grants do not need to be repaid.
  • National Veterans Legal Services Program: This organization of lawyers fights for the rights of military veterans and provides pro bono assistance in some cases. The site may provide some direction for veterans who may be seeking legal redress.
  • Department of Health and Human Services: This federal government website provides information specifically geared toward women’s health. There is information for families and children, individuals, and young adults.
  • VA Kids Website: This site is designed to be used by children to learn about veterans' issues. It has resources for K-12 students, as well as information for teachers.
  • U.S. Dept. of Defense Sexual Assault and Prevention Response: For women who have experienced sexual assault in the military, or who just want to know their rights, this website is a great resource. Women who are concerned about being dishonorably discharged or being punished for reporting sexual assault can receive advice and counseling here.
  • Department of Defense Family Benefits: This booklet covers the benefits and services that families of military personnel are entitled to. Educational benefits, health care, child care, and family services can be researched here.
  • National Military Family Association: This charity provides information for families of a newly deployed service member, as well as mental health information, information on spouse education, and help for supporting your family while in the service.
